8.5/10

As a tech enthusiast, I have experimented with various thermal cameras over the years. Recently, I had the opportunity to test the HIKMICRO Mini2, a mini thermal camera for Android. To say the least, I was impressed.

Unboxing the Mini2, I immediately noticed its small size. At 42 × 22.5 × 11.2 mm, it’s barely larger than a thumb drive. Weighing only 20 grams, it’s light enough to carry around in my pocket without feeling any weight. Despite its size, it felt robust and durable, thanks to the IP40-rated aluminum alloy housing. I had my doubts about the durability of such a small device, but it surpassed my expectations, handling the occasional accidental drop without a problem. The Mini2 is designed to be ready 24/7 for almost anything, and in terms of durability and portability, it doesn’t disappoint.

Plugging the Mini2 into my Android smartphone, it was instantly recognized. The Mini2 is truly a plug-and-play device – there was no setup required, no batteries to worry about, just simple and immediate functionality. I appreciated that it ran on very little power, leaving my phone’s battery life largely unaffected during use.

The Mini2’s performance in terms of image quality was commendable. It features a highly sensitive VOx detector with a resolution of 256 x 192 pixels, which might not sound impressive on paper, but the resulting thermal images were surprisingly clear. I was able to make out small details that I’ve missed with other thermal cameras. The 25 Hz video capability ensured smooth footage in real-time, which was particularly useful during dynamic inspections.

One feature that stood out to me was the Mini2’s accuracy in temperature measurements. Whether I was using it for a home inspection to locate drafts or for troubleshooting electronic devices by detecting overheating components, the Mini2 provided reliable readings from -20°C to 350°C. It was comforting to know that I could trust the device’s readings without having to second-guess.

The HIKMICRO Viewer APP for Android transformed my phone into a complete thermal analysis tool. With high-temperature alarms, 15 color palettes, 9 measurement areas, and the ability to share images, it provided an extensive set of features that added value to the Mini2. The app was user-friendly, and even though it offered a wealth of settings, it never felt overwhelming. I found the full-screen measurement particularly useful as it allowed for center spot, hot spot, cold spot, and three custom spot readings.

The Mini2 comes with a 40 cm extending cord, providing the flexibility to view and inspect through narrow openings or difficult-to-reach places. This was a thoughtful addition and proved quite helpful during some of my home inspections.

However, it’s important to mention that the Mini2 is not without its drawbacks. While it’s compatible with Android devices, it would have been a more versatile tool if it had extended support for iOS and Windows devices. The device is also limited to a smaller temperature range compared to some of its competitors.

To wrap up, my experience with the HIKMICRO Mini2 was overwhelmingly positive. Its compact size, clear thermal image quality, accurate temperature readings, and comprehensive app make it a handy tool for anyone requiring thermal imaging capabilities. With a few improvements, particularly in the area of device compatibility, this could easily become a 10/10 device. As it stands, I would rate the HIKMICRO Mini2 an 8.5/10 for its remarkable performance in such a small package.
