I have a launch version of the Switch, this means that I get around 3 hours of battery life depending on the game I play. But rather than forking out money for the upgraded version, I wanted to give this a try.

There are three parts to the ChargePlay Clutch, the main battery unit and two joycon grips. These ends will connect to the main unit or themselves via magnets. The whole thing is incredibly sturdy, and the battery adds a bit of weight to the whole device.

To attach it to your Switch, you take off the two grips and unhook the top grill protector. You can then attach the Switch with the USB-C plug and snap down the top grill. This has a satisfying click and makes sure you know it’s secure. You could now just use that as it is, as the ChargePlay Clutch has a kickstand and you can play it in tabletop mode. You can also attach the two JoyCon grips and use it as an ergonomic handheld. This is a lot more comfortable than the grip Nintendo supplies with the Switch.

The main reason I use it is for the handheld mode. You attach the grips on either end, and you get an ergonomic grip for your Switch, that also charges it! The whole thing is very secure and I couldn’t any sign of a wobble.

There are LED indicators on the back to let you know the current battery level and will also let you know when charging. There is a pass-through port on the back so you can keep the Switch powered on while still in the ChargePlay Clutch.

The grill protector at the top has all the cutouts in the right place, so nothing is blocked when in use. There is a single HyperX logo on the front and the rest of the design is very sleek and minimal.

The battery unit will add more weight to the Switch. Handheld is still fun, but gyro controls are a tad more difficult. The weight and size remind me of the old Wii U gamepads.

Overall, The HyperX ChargePlay Clutch is a must-have for any Switch gamer. If you play in portable mode, this will give you a more comfortable experience and more battery.
