Amongst the best beat’em up series ever created, jammin’ ‘90s beats and over the top street beating, the iconic series Streets of Rage comes back with a masterful tribute to and revitalization of the classic action fans adore in Streets of Rage 4 on Nintendo Switch.

I was blown away as soon as I started playing. The amazing linework and visuals look fantastic. The environments all feel the same, but now have life added to them. Neon signs will flicker and give off a light onto the street. Overall, creating a John Carpenter-Esq 80’s city.

The baddies from the previous games are all back, and still kicking ass. They look a lot better, with more details and bright colours. Their eclectic attacks keep you on your toes. You have basic punching and jump kicks, along with special moves that use up some life. This means that you now have to plan your attacks.

Combos are the name of the game, with enemies being chucked against the walls and each other. These will help build up a combo bonus, for special attacks. You can also pick up food, weapons and stars for special moves.

I am reminded a lot of Streets of Rage 2, the gameplay is a lot of in-depth than the original game. The moves and attacks have a lot more weight to them, and the whole game is just fun to play. The controls are easy to grasp, and you don’t have to worry about remembering a huge moves list. This is classic old school fighting, which anyone can just pick up and play.

You start with a small roster of playable characters. But the fun starts when you can start unlocking classic characters from other games in the series. A nice touch is that you can play with a CRT filter on top, to play into the retro feel. Everything you remember from the old games is here, just tweaked and polished.

The music is fantastic and harkens back to the ’80s/90s. The visuals are amazing and are identical if played on the Switch or the Ps4.
