8.5/10

Exploring the new offering from Nothing, the Phone (2), is a refreshing endeavour, offering a breath of fresh air from the usual predictability of smartphone trends. Bursting onto the scene with their commitment to delivering a novel and sophisticated smartphone experience, Nothing has gone a step further with the Phone (2), granting us the opportunity to ‘come to the bright side’. The uniqueness of Phone (2) is evident throughout its design and functionality, which, as a result, I award an impressive rating of 8.5 out of 10.

Immersed in its unique design, the first thing you’ll notice is the newly designed Nothing OS 2.0. The aesthetic appeal of the OS is enhanced by the refreshing simplicity and elegance of its user interface. More interestingly, the OS comes with a new Glyph interface. This feature allows you to assign different light and sound sequences for each contact and notification type, offering a more intuitive and personalised interaction with your phone.

It comes with a dual rear camera boasting an impressive 50 MP, alongside a 32 MP front camera. This capacity promises high-quality photo and video capture, which is a marked improvement over its predecessor, the Phone (1). The photo and video quality, steady as a rock and clear as crystal, are accentuated by an 18-bit Image Signal Processor (ISP), 4K 60fps capabilities, and an Advanced HDR feature. With these, the Phone (2) presents a sophisticated camera system that rivals even the most established brands in the market.

Turning our attention to the display, it sports a 6.7” flexible OLED display (LTPO) which provides a vibrant and responsive touch interface. The Snapdragon® 8+ Gen 1 processor bolsters the phone’s performance, offering an 80% improvement over the Phone (1). This powerful processor, coupled with the 8GB RAM and 128GB storage capacity, makes the Phone (2) a formidable contender in the market, delivering a smooth and efficient user experience.

What also stands out with the Phone (2) is the emphasis on sustainable design. The phone features materials sourced from recycling processes, including the use of 100% recycled aluminium, copper, and tin. This commitment to sustainability doesn’t stop at the phone but extends to the packaging, which is 100% plastic-free. This conscientious approach to environmental preservation deserves praise.

The battery life of the Phone (2) is impressive, boasting a 4,700mAh battery which can be charged fully in just 55 minutes. The phone is also compatible with 15W Qi wireless charging, allowing you to wirelessly charge your accessories, like the Ear (2). This proves invaluable for users on-the-go, enabling a seamless transition between tasks.

The aesthetics of the Phone (2) are also commendable. It sports a gently curved pillowed glass back, which feels premium in your hand. The phone is unique in its transparent back design, exposing a series of LED strips that are not only aesthetically pleasing but functional, serving as visual indicators for notifications and timers.

Now, delving into the quirks of the Phone (2), the Nothing OS 2.0 has some unique features. For instance, there are options for making app folders larger and providing one-tap access to apps within these folders. Widgets can be used for Quick Settings functions, further enhancing convenience and usability. Additionally, the OS supports third-party apps, presenting a vast world of functionality to explore.

In terms of the overall user experience, it does a commendable job of integrating high-end features with an appealing design. However, it isn’t without its drawbacks. The use of last year’s Snapdragon chip, while still delivering solid performance, leaves a bit of room for improvement. Furthermore, while the sustainability focus is commendable, the carbon footprint at 53.45kg CO2 equivalent could still be lower.

To conclude, the Phone (2) from Nothing offers a powerful combination of aesthetics, performance, and sustainability. Though there is room for improvement, it delivers a unique and refreshing experience that stands out in the market. With its novel features and the ambitious Nothing OS 2.0, the Phone (2) is a smartphone worth considering.
